In my 17 years of commercial flytying I have never seen a "new" fly cause as much of an uproar as the Tasty Toad has. Since it was introduced to the flyfishing public in the March/April 2006 issue of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, I have tied more of them than any other pattern. They must really work well, because I have yet to hear a negative comment about them, and my clients order and reorder them.

I labelled this Tasty Toad as Chartreuse, but it really is not. It is a fluoresecent green and is the "secret" color for the Tarpon toad. The specific color poly yarn used for this combination was discontinued, but I was fortunate enough to find a large skein of it. This is probably the first or second most popular toad. Not only is this fly great for Tarpon, it is excellent for Redfish also.

Pat Ford, the author of the article in Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, credits Keys guide Harry Spears with developing the Tasty Toad for bonefish. Then others adapted it for Tarpon. From everything I can find out, it really was a fly that those that knew about wanted to keep, if not secret, at least as unknown and unpublicized as possible.
